Welcome to Golem Docs

I built Golem Docs because I wanted one editor that opens every kind of document: Word, PDF, Markdown, web pages, even a CSV file, and more, and lets me keep working in whichever shape I need. It lives in your browser. This page is a document like any other: click anywhere and start typing.

What it does

• Open almost anything. Drop a file onto the window, or choose Open from the File menu.
• Change shape without losing anything. Convert To, in the File menu, switches what a document is edited as, and going back gives you your formatting again.
• Mark up PDFs. Highlight, underline, strike out and leave notes on a PDF's own pages.
• Edit PDFs. Switch to Edit PDF to change a page's text where it sits, move, add or delete pictures and shapes, black out private details, and rearrange pages. Fill In types into a form's fields.
• Work together. Share, in the File menu, lets you invite specific people by email as editors or viewers. Everyone who has the document open edits the same copy, and changes show up live. Sharing needs my server, so it is part of the subscription; editing on your own is free.
• Ask the AI. The AI assistant in the corner can read your document, rewrite or add paragraphs, format text, leave comments, fill in forms and convert to another format, and Undo takes its changes back. It is part of the subscription, because every request costs me money. View › AI Assistant shows or hides it.

Try this

1. Change shape. In the File menu, choose Convert To, then Markdown. This page turns into plain text with # headings, and you can convert it back.
2. Open some data. Drop a CSV file onto the window. It opens as a table you can edit, and downloads as the same CSV.
3. Ask the AI. Open the AI assistant and ask it to summarize this page or make a heading stand out, then press Undo if you want the change back. This one needs a subscription.
4. Edit together. In the File menu, choose Share and add the email of someone who has signed in to Golem Docs. When they open the document from Shared with me, you both edit it live. This one needs a subscription too.

When you're ready, choose New from the File menu for a blank document, or Download when you need a file for someone else.

• Word, OpenDocument, Rich Text, PDF, HTML, EPUB, Markdown, LaTeX, AsciiDoc, reStructuredText, Org, CSV and plain text all open as documents you can edit.
• Command palette: press Ctrl+Shift+P (Cmd+Shift+P on a Mac) to search and run any command.
• Page thumbnails: View › Page Sidebar (Alt+P) shows a column of pages to jump between. On a PDF you can drag them into a new order or delete them.
• Rename: click the document's name in the middle of the menu bar to type a new one.
• Links and tables: Ctrl+K (Cmd+K on a Mac) links the selection, and the toolbar's Table button inserts a grid.
• Spelling and grammar: press F7. Find and replace is in the Edit menu.
• Search all documents: Edit › Search All Documents (Ctrl+Shift+F, Cmd+Shift+F on a Mac) finds words and #tags in every document you have. Type #project and a space to make a tag, then Ctrl+click it to find every document with it.
• Comments: select text and choose Comment from the Insert menu. Others can reply, and you can resolve a comment when it is dealt with.
• Themes, Dark Mode and toolbars are in the View menu, and the Tools menu changes the language.

Saving and subscribing

There is no Save button. Every change is kept in this browser a moment after you make it, and you don't need an account. File › Open shows all your documents, and Download gives you a file whenever you want one. Saving in your browser and downloading are free, with no subscription needed.

Everything above that runs in your browser costs me nothing, so it is free. A subscription is $5 a month and pays for the parts that cost me money to run:

• Sync keeps your documents on my server, so you can open them on any device.
• Share and edit together with a link or with specific people.
• AI is built in, with nothing to set up. I pay for every request it makes.

What is left over lets me keep working on Golem Docs. If a subscription ends, your documents stay in this browser, and you can still open documents that a subscriber shares with you. See the pricing for the cost, or choose File › Subscribe… to get started.

About the name

In Jewish tradition, a golem is a figure shaped from clay and brought to life by a word. In the best-known telling, Rabbi Judah Loew of Prague shapes one from the mud of the Vltava river and writes emet, the Hebrew word for "truth," on its forehead. Erase the first letter and the word becomes met, "dead," and the golem returns to clay.

A document is much the same: a shapeless thing that words bring to life. Golem Docs lets yours take whatever form you need, Word or Markdown or PDF or a web page, while what you wrote stays true underneath.

About the developer

I'm David Figatner and Claude. Golem Docs began as a replacement for two things I use every day: Obsidian, which runs my life, and the tools I kept hunting for to convert or edit PDFs. ZIP files made it more interesting, because an archive can hold anything, so an editor that opens one has to open whatever is inside. Then I thought it would be fun if it could open every kind of document there is, and I'm still building toward that. Much of the code was written with Claude, with me steering (I promise I could have coded it myself, but it would have taken years).
